Corns and calluses are protective layers of compacted, dead skin cells. They are caused by repeated friction from skin rubbing against bony areas or against an irregularity in a shoe. Corns ordinarily form on the toes and calluses on the soles of the feet. Options to manage and treat the lesions include regular maintenance visits to keep the corn or callus reduced, the use of padding, changing shoe gear to minimize pressures, and the use of orthotics to relieve the pressures beneath the foot. When pain from a corn or callus is unrelenting, surgical correction of the bony prominence may be necessary.
